About Mychel
Mychel is a School Psychologist with experience from 2001 to present in public, nonpublic, charter, online, homeschool, and private school settings with ages birth-to-three through high school. She specializes in early childhood education and family-community-school connections. Mychel has participated in a variety of professional development opportunities including: trauma informed practices; ABA principles and interventions; early childhood development and intervention; mental health and behavioral support; as well as staying current on laws and ethics in special education.
Schooling
She attended California State University, Northridge where she obtained a B.S. in Psychology and B.A. in Deaf Studies in 2001. Mychel then went on to complete a dual master program in 2004, which included required coursework for the Marriage and Family Therapy and School Psychology programs. Only eight students per intensive cohort were admitted. This program included fall, spring, and summer courses for three years.
She completed her internships in the Los Angeles Unified School District at McBride Special Education Center (pre-k-12 highly impacted children including developmental delays, autism spectrum disorder, and medically fragile students); as well as Las Virgenes School District at the elementary and middle school levels. Upon completion Mychel graduated with honors.
Career
She began her career in the Lake Washington School District in Redmond, WA where she worked at an elementary and junior high school in a high socio-economic population. In this environment Mychel refined her knowledge of special education law and ability to work with litigious populations. She then spent two years working in the greater Philadelphia and surrounding areas in a contractual capacity. Mychel worked in a variety of settings including doing in home and charter school evaluations, as well as becoming the psychologist and counselor at a charter school in Chester. During this time Mychel primarily worked with low socio-economic, diverse populations. It is where she further sparked her passion to strive for greater fairness and equity for all children and families. Upon returning to Washington Mychel moved to Bellingham and began her employment of nine years in the Ferndale School District. Early Childhood Education and family connections became a passion and career focus during this time. In 2017 she accepted a position in the Blaine School District as the psychologist at the Primary School working with children preschool through second grade. It was during this time Mychel decided her passions and interests were being constrained within the school setting. She opened her own business in order to explore possibilities and see where the next chapter of her career would take her.
Interests
Mychel enjoys spending time with her daughter Rose (a sweet little powerhouse of a girl), snuggling up with her cat and a book, the occasional Netflix binge, taking walks and hikes in the beautiful parks and mountains surrounding Bellingham with her dog, connecting with good friends, visiting family, traveling, and working in her yard. She is active in human/civil rights issues, justice system reform, and common sense practices for educating children.
